Sally Twinings Yes there are comic books in Astro City and Sally earns her living writing them, along with an odd fiction novel now and again. History Sally Twinings was an aspiring comic book writer that faced rejections from most publishers apart for some work at Rampart Comics. But after getting a novel published she got an invitation from Manny Monkton, publisher of Bulldog Comics. After turning in her first script and seeing how Manny had heavily edited and jazzed up her story, she kept having second thoughts about wanting to continue working for him. She despised the way he sensationalized the true adventures of the real life heroes and villains they wrote about, and the way he lied to Crackerjack the one hero he had a an authorized license for publishing stories. He even skimped him on his royalty payments. Sally tried beefing up her stories to mimic the style of Bulldog comics, yet still they came up a bit short and required editorial rewrites by other writers. Still he kept giving her fresh assignments. Noting that it couldn't be cost effective, she wondered why he persisted in working with her. Inquiries with Eli Gavin, Manny's right-hand man since the 1960s, provided her with insights into how Manny formed Bulldog Comics and why he was ousted(fired) from Rampart Comics. The more she heard, the more it stirred up memories of how she felt reading Manny's comics from her childhood. It awoke a passion and desire to recapture that same excitement in her comic tales. A few months later at an Astro City Comicon while viewing a panel discussion featuring Manny and other editors, the supervillain Glowworm attacked. He was angry at Manny for portraying him as a racist in several Bulldog comics stories. In real life, he was in fact a black man before the freak accident that enabled his super powers. In his rage, he beat and burned Manny badly and was intending to do the same to other Bulldog employees including Sally and Eli. Fortunately Samaritan captured him first. Laying in his hospital bed, Manny was already back in high spirits and had called Eli and Sally there with ideas for a line of comic titles featuring characters of a cosmic nature. Entities who wouldn't give a "gnat's fart" about ordinary humans. Sally remained amazed and perplexed at Manny's attitudes and audacity after surviving what he had just experienced with Glowworm. Six months later, the Cosmic Action titles were top selling books and Sally was riding high. She'd even talked with the Flying Fox about starting a new book about a hero just starting out. But one morning while on her way to the Bulldog offices, the Bulldog building had completely disappeared with Manny inside. Sally felt a faint smell of ozone, which she thought seemed like a "gnat's fart," but on a giant, cosmic scale. One of Manny's rival editors, Bob Cottonman, was there too and never one to miss an opportunity, asked Sally about what books they had in the queue to be printed and if she was interested it helping them see print along with a special Manny Monkton tribute issue. She quickly declined, courteously.
